If your pet has bad breath, it probably isn’t on the list of things you love about him. Our Dental Chews and Original Ultra® Whole Body Health® Dry Cat Formulas can help freshen your pet’s mouth, but that isn’t the only reason to try them.

Nearly two thirds of pet owners don’t provide the dental care that veterinarians recommend, which can leave plaque on their pets’ teeth. That plaque can then start a cycle of damage leading to tooth loss and other serious health issues*. Luckily, periodontal disease can be prevented.

Natural Balance® is here to help with several formulas that have been scientifically designed to help support your pet’s oral health.

FAQ

I can see plaque and tartar on my pet’s teeth. Is this the start of periodontal disease?
Plaque left on the teeth can harden into tartar. Tartar above the gum line is sometimes obvious, but it is not the cause of periodontal disease. The real problem develops as plaque and tartar spread under the gum line. Bacteria in this plaque below the gum line can set in motion a cycle of damage to the supporting tissues around the tooth, eventually leading to loss of the tooth.

Aside from bad breath and tooth loss, are there other health risks associated with periodontal disease?
Your pet’s teeth and gums are part of their digestive system. Strong teeth chew food into smaller, swallowable pieces, for example. It follows that when your pet’s mouth and teeth are not healthy, other problems may occur.

How do Original Ultra® Whole Body Health® Dry Formulas help support oral health?
All Original Ultra® Whole Body Health® formulas contain proper levels of calcium and phosphorus to maintain strong teeth and bones.

How do Natural Balance® Dental Chews help support the health of my dog’s mouth?
Natural Balance® Dental Chews are scientifically formulated with unique grooves that encourage your dog’s natural chewing instinct. That healthy chewing action helps reduce and remove plaque and tartar. Our Dental Chews also have added Vitamin C, an antioxidant nutrient that helps support healthy gums. And dogs love the flavors, so you can be sure they’ll enjoy Dental Chews as a way to support their oral health!

What is in Natural Balance® Dental Chews?
The formulas differ for each flavor, but these are a few of our ingredients:

  • Parsley and alfalfa
  • Glycerin
  • Beta Carotene

Are Natural Balance formulas all I need to keep my pet’s teeth and gums healthy?
No. Natural Balance® Dental Chews and our Original Ultra® Whole Body Health® Formulas can be helpful components of a complete oral care regimen. At a minimum, such a regimen should also include twice yearly checkups with your veterinarian and frequent teeth cleaning at home. Your veterinarian can help you establish a cleaning routine for your pet and recommend other products that can help keep your pet’s mouth clean and healthy.

Any more tips for caring for my pet’s mouth?

  • DO: Visit your veterinarian for checkups twice a year
  • DO: Clean your pet’s teeth at home with products recommended by your veterinarian
  • DO: Provide your pet with dental toys and treats to improve their chewing and oral stimulation
  • DON’T: Ever use human toothpaste (it can be harmful to your pet)
  • DON’T: Ignore the possible signs of dental disease

Hoppy has always had a problem with bad breath. We've tried different products, but nothing worked very well. That is, until we tried Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc. Dental Chews. He absolutely loved them! And they really helped his breath. We were impressed!
